■By the way, in this overall structure where consciousness and matter are
inseparable, let us pay particular attention to the following points. As
mentioned above, since the flow of inherent time is continuous, the entirety
of the real temporal process is given to us all at once, and therefore
all parts of it are directly connected to each other.
■However, scientific knowledge divides these and contrasts them in the
relationship between past and present, and present and future. Between
the present and the distant past and distant future, there are countless
closer pasts and nearer futures.
■Distant past experiences transcend intermediate past experiences and are
directly connected to present situations and future possibilities. Reality
is the whole unbroken connection between consciousness and matter.
■Therefore, reality can never be reconstructed, no matter how many parts
of divided temporal passages are pieced together.
■In this way, when we perceive matter, we can, if necessary, recall any
past experience from among the entire chain of countless past experiences.
By matching our past experiences with the way we deal with matter, we can
choose a preferred way of dealing with matter. Furthermore, we can forget
(suppress recall of) past experiences whenever we no longer need them.
■The above is possible because any recalled past experience (A) is always
in an unbroken connection with other past experiences (B) that have been
forgotten (recollection is suppressed). This is because it exists all at
once while constituting the whole. In other words, A cannot exist unless
it is together with B. However, A constitutes an element of present consciousness.
Recollection of A means to call or summon A into present consciousness.
In contrast to this, B, that is, past experiences that are not summoned
to the present consciousness as elements of the present consciousness,
are elements of unconsciousness in the sense that they are not elements
of consciousness. The unconsciousness is the entirety of an infinite number
of B’s.
■Therefore, to say that “A exists only as one with B” means that “the present
consciousness exists by forming an Inherent Time that is connected to the
vast unconsciousness that is the entire past. The various findings of modern
psychology pioneered by Freud, Charcot, Bergson, and others have revealed
that at the base of consciousness lies a vast and profound unconsciousness
world that encompasses all past experiences and memories. These findings
also revealed the existence of a complex interaction between the unconsciousness
and consciousness. These findings provide direct proof of the above fact.
